It seems totally insane, but here’s what’s going on.

What you’re seeing in this video is the Jastrow illusion. Discovered in 1892 by psychologist Joseph Jastrow, this illusion affects the viewer’s perception of length. Because the longest side of the bottom piece sits up against the shortest side of the top piece, it appears as though the bottom piece is larger. If you were to line up the longest sides of both pieces, however, you’d realize that they are both the same size.

Turns out, this happens when multiple female caterpillars lay their eggs in the same tree. When the eggs hatch, a chain reaction of sorts can occur as thousands of young moths create webs for protection against predators while they look for food.

These lovable little robots were the toys that everyone wanted, and people went to insane lengths to get them. Believe it or not, they’re still around, and they’re much better than they were back then. They now feature LED screens for eyes and have their own iOS and Android apps!

As you might guess, the improved functionality of the Furby has attracted the attention of hackers. They’re seeking to alter the factory settings of their Furbies and make them do all sorts of things that Hasbro never, ever intended.

What they can do is pretty crazy.

A whole group of hackers is now trying to up the bizarre ante. Their Facebook page even provides detailed instructions on how you can take your Furby apart and reprogram it.
