Obama, GOP trade blame over high gas prices

In his Saturday radio address, Obama touted his “all-of-the-above strategy” that stresses development of alternative energy sources as well as increased domestic oil and gas production. He chided Republicans for promoting “three-point plans for two-dollar gas,” and said a long-term plan in required.


“Ending this cycle of rising gas prices won’t be easy, and it won’t happen overnight,” Obama said. “But that’s why you sent us to Washington — to solve tough problems like this one.”


Republicans say Obama policies have blocked energy development — particularly the proposed Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast, and one of the topics of the Republican radio address.


Gov. Jack Dalrymple, R-N.D., said North Dakota has doubled its oil production in recent years, “but we cannot effectively market our crude oil domestically without a large North-South pipeline.”


Dalrymple also protested high budget deficits and new regulations from the Obama administration as impediments to economic development.


Obama and aides said the Keystone pipeline still requires environmental review, and that in any case it will be years before the pipeline could transport any oil.
